    • Abstract:
This reconstruction of the life of the Canadian movie and programming personality Fernanda Tavares is a family and biographical case study, rooted in the mid-20th century Azorean migration across the Atlantic. The article offers a detailed account of the Tavares family's initial attempt to relocate to southern Brazil and of their later move from the island of São Miguel to Canada. The family eventually settled in Montreal (Québec). Drawing upon interviews, archival documentation, and a diversity of web sources, the article tracks Fernanda's life in Montreal as a model primary and secondary student, then recipient of a communications degree at Sir George Williams (now Concordia) University in the early 1980s. Her career eventually led to work at Air Canada and then at a local Montreal television station, as an actor, and later as a television producer in Toronto. The article concludes with Fernanda, thirty-nine years old, struggling in 1997 with personal and professional setbacks, coping with anxiety and depression, and then, tragically, committing suicide.
