Coffeehouses and Intellectuals: The Impact of Istanbul Kurdish Coffeehouses on the Development of Kurdish Nationalism. (English)
- Abstract:
Coffeehouses have been one of the most important places in social life in the Middle East since the 16th century. In addition to meeting and chatting, the most important function of coffeehouses is the dissemination of information and ideas. For this reason, the ground created by coffeehouses caused concern among rulers. As a result of this concern, they were banned, prevented and penalized, yet they have continued to exist until today. In the 19th century, the coffeehouse was one of the most important public spaces in the Ottoman Empire. The coffeehouses of the period played important roles in social and political transformations. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, there were many coffeehouses known as Kurdish coffeehouses. These coffeehouses were a base not only for solidarity and social relations but also for the activities and work of intellectuals. The role of coffeehouses in the development of Kurdish nationalism is clearly visible in autobiographical narratives. This study aims to examine their influence on the development of Kurdish nationalism. In this study, the influence of coffeehouses is analyzed through the autobiographies of Ekrem Cemîlpaşa, Kadrî Cemîlpaşa and Nûrî Dersîmî. As a result, it is seen that the coffeehouses of the period in Istanbul had a significant impact on the development of Kurdish nationalism and intelligentsia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
