- Abstract:
Keivonn Woodard, an 11-year-old Deaf actor, gained widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Sam Burrell in the TV series The Last of Us. The character of Sam was made Deaf in the show to increase disability representation onscreen. Keivonn's performance in the series earned him an Emmy nomination, making him the youngest actor ever to be recognized in the category and the first Black Deaf actor to secure a nomination in the Television Academy's history. Keivonn sees his acting opportunities as a way to make Deaf people feel more seen and believes that showing Deaf people playing Deaf characters is authentic and important.
