The role of nationality in player evaluation: Does a footballer's nationality matter in terms of market value?

Player valuation, i.e. the determination of the market value of a player, is constantly evolving in football thanks to the ever-increasing financial opportunities, the expansion of available data and the results of increasingly sophisticated methods. It is a common narrative among football followers that players of certain nationalities are overvalued or undervalued compared to players of similar but different nationalities. The relationship between nationality and market value remains unclear from the literature to date. We will try to prove this relationship empirically and investigate whether the dimension of nationality is indeed absent in Transfermarkt's market value estimates. In our study, we apply descriptive statistics and multivariate regression on data from the 2022/2023 season. Players playing in attacking positions in the 5 European top leagues are included in the analysis. There are striking differences between the positional averages of the market value of players by nationality or continent. However, no significant relationship between nationality and market value was found in the regression. Furthermore, our results do not provide evidence that the nationality of players is considered when determining market values at Transfermarkt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A játékosértékelés, azaz a játékosok piaci értékének meghatározása folyamatosan fejlődik a labdarúgásban, a továbbra is növekvő pénzügyi lehetőségeknek, az elérhető adatok bővülésének és az egyre kifinomultabb módszerek eredményeinek köszönhetően. Elterjedt narratíva a labdarúgást figyelemmel kísérők körében, hogy bizonyos nemzetiségű játékosok túl- vagy alulértékeltek a hozzájuk hasonló, de más nemzetiségű játékosokhoz képest. A nemzetiség és a piaci érték közötti kapcsolat továbbra sem egyértelmű a szakirodalom eddigi eredményei alapján. Ezt a kapcsolatot próbáljuk bizonyítani empirikus módon, továbbá azt is megvizsgáljuk, hogy valóban nem jelenik-e meg a nemzetiség dimenziója a Transfermarkt piaci értékbecsléseiben. A tanulmányunk során leíró statisztikákat és többváltozós regressziót alkalmazunk a 2022/2023-as szezon adatain. Az elemzésbe az 5 európai topligában pályára lépő, támadó felfogású pozíciókban szereplő játékosok kerültek be. Szembetűnő különbségek vannak a játékosok piaci értékének helyzeti középértékei között nemzetiségek vagy kontinensek szerinti bontásban. A regresszió során viszont nem találtunk szignifikáns kapcsolatot a nemzetiség és a piaci érték között, továbbá eredményeinkkel nem bizonyítható, hogy figyelembe vennék a játékosok nemzetiségét a Transfermarktnál a piaci értékek meghatározásánál.
