An Example Of A Trans-sectarian Approach In The Diaspora Where Sunni And Shia Identities Are Blurred: The American "Make Space" Community. (English)

The history of Islam in America begins with Muslims brought as slaves from Africa in the 17th century. Influenced by the multilingual, multicultural, "diverse" structure of the new country to which they came, Muslims were unwilling to transfer their local debates, essentially based on the Sunni-Shia divide, to this region. Instead, they preferred to reinforce their belonging under the umbrella concept of "Muslim. They have developed the identity of "Muslim American," which expresses a single sense of belonging between preserving their local culture and "being American". However, this identity has taken on a negative content due to events such as the September 11 attacks. This situation has forced Muslims to emphasize their integration into society, their "Americanness". The transition from "Muslim American" which emphasizes their Muslim identity to "American Muslim" signifies a prioritization of their American identity. The goal of this transition has been to create young American Muslim communities that have been raised with both Western and Islamic perspectives. Make Space, based in Virginia, USA, was born out of such an ideal. Make Space is a community founded on the idea of a non-sectarian space where young Muslims who have grown up in America's "freedom" environment can come with their own sectarian, cultural, and identity differences. It is the reflection of America's "diverse" identity on a Muslim community. This diverse structure paved the way for Make Space to adopt an inclusive religious discourse that is not based on sectarian bigotry and is not exclusive, and to have a "moderate Islamist" identity. The aspects that distinguish Make Space from other Muslim-majority communities, and even give it its identity, stem from the fact that it implements activities that are a natural part of American life as the basic foundation of its curriculum. Amerika'da İslam'ın tarihi 17. yüzyılda Afrika'dan köle olarak getirilen Müslümanlarla başlamıştır. Müslümanlar geldikleri bu yeni ülkenin çok dilli, çok kültürlü "çoğulcu" yapısının etkisiyle temelde Sünni-Şii ayrışmasına dayanan yerel tartışmalarını bu coğrafyaya getirmek konusunda istekli olmamışlardır. Bunun yerine "Müslüman" çatı kavramı altında kendi aidiyetlerini pekiştirmeyi tercih etmişlerdir. Hem kendi yerel kültürlerini korumak hem de Amerikalı olmak arasında tek bir aidiyeti ifade eden "Muslim American" kimliğini geliştirmişlerdir. Ancak bu kimlik 11 Eylül saldırıları gibi nedenlerle süreç içerisinde negatif bir içeriğe sahip olmuştur. Bu durum da Müslümanları, topluma entegre oldukları yönlerini, "Amerikalı"lıklarını ön plana çıkarmak zorunda bırakmıştır. Müslümanlıklarını vurgulayan "Muslim American" kavramından "American Muslim" kavramına geçiş yaşanmaya başlamıştır. Bu geçişle birlikte hem Batılı hem de İslami perspektifle yetişmiş genç Amerikalı Müslüman topluluklar oluşturulması amaçlanmıştır. Amerika Virginia merkezli Make Space de böyle bir idealin sonucu ortaya çıkmıştır. Make Space, Amerika'nın "özgürlük" ortamında yetişen genç Müslümanların, kendi mezhepsel, kültürel ve kimliksel farklılıklarıyla gelebildikleri mezhepler üstü bir alan düşüncesiyle kurulmuş bir topluluktur. Amerika'nın "çoğulcu" kimliğinin bir Müslüman topluluğa yansımış halidir. Bu çoğulcu yapı Make Space'nin mezhebi taassuplara dayanmayan, dışlayıcı olmayan kapsayıcı bir din söylemini benimsemesine ve "ılımlı İslamcı" bir kimliğe sahip olmasına zemin hazırlamıştır. Make Space'i çoğunluğu oluşturan diğer Müslüman topluluklardan farklılaştıran hatta kimliğini kazandıran yönleri ise Amerikan hayatının doğal parçası olan faaliyetleri kendi müfredatında temel esas olarak uygulamasından kaynaklanmıştır.
