    • Abstract:
A recent study conducted at the University Hospital Erlangen focused on autosomal recessive renal tubular dysgenesis, a rare and usually fatal inherited disorder of the renin-angiotensin system. The researchers aimed to gain new insights into the disease mechanisms by studying an adolescent individual with an unknown chronic kidney disease. Through exome sequencing and biochemical analysis, they discovered a pathogenic homozygous missense variant in the angiotensinogen (AGT) gene, which led to low blood AGT concentrations but upregulation of renin (REN) expression in kidney cells. This study highlights the importance of genetic analysis in diagnosing renal tubular dysgenesis and provides insights into compensatory mechanisms in response to AGT depletion.
