Physicists have developed a mathematical procedure that explains how to create a clock from any random sequence of events. The researchers focused on processes that appear the least like clocks, such as ocean waves or the motion of the sun. These processes, known as Markovian, consist of random events or "jumps" that do not follow a predetermined pattern. The team created equations that capture the statistical properties of these random jumps, allowing for the estimation of time and the accuracy of that estimate. This research not only provides a method for turning random processes into clocks but also offers insights into the performance of classical clocks and the ability of biological systems to keep time.
