- Subject Terms:
- Abstract: This article deals with the presence of astrological science in the Tesoro de la lengua castellana o española (1611) by Sebastián de Covarrubias y Orozco, as well as in the Suplemento and, additionally, in his Emblemas morales (1610). To do so, the state of development of this science is contextualized, in which astronomy was moving towards scientific autonomy, the ecclesiastical dogmatics of the moment are discussed, and the scope of these studies at the University of Salamanca is detailed. As far as astronomy is concerned, Covarrubias demonstrates a solid knowledge of the subject and, in line with his brother Juan de Horozco, considers the new heliocentric theory as paradoxical. Regarding astrology, he presents an orthodox attitude: considers permissible the prognosis of natural phenomena (meteorological and medical) and is contrary to its judicial practice.
