Adherence to treatment guidelines in type 2 diabetes mellitus: a brief review. (English)
    • Abstract:
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic and evolving condition that has a significant impact on public health. It is a disease that manifests as symptomatic or asymptomatic hyperglycaemia, falls within the spectrum of metabolic diseases and affects many organ systems. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is directly related to both insulin resistance and relative insulin deprivation and is treated with lifestyle changes as well as various combinations of antidiabetic drugs. Adherence to treatment recommendations is fundamental for optimal glycaemic control and involves both pharmacotherapy and diet/exercise. A variety of individual, social, economic and other factors may cause non-adherence to treatment, and therefore the role of the multidisciplinary team, including the treating physician, nutritionist, health psychologist, among others, is critical for patient support and optimal outcomes in the management of the disease.
