LOCAL ELITES IN THE SETTLEMENT PROCESS OF ROYAL TOWNS IN THE TERRA LEGIONIS (1157-1230). (English)
- Abstract:
The aim of this study is to enhance our understanding of medieval new towns (villas nuevas) through the analysis of the relationship between the characteristics of local society and spatial hierarchy and organization during the foundation of royal towns (villas regias) in the terra Legionis during the reigns of Fernando II and Alfonso IX. We will examine the evidence of local elites in their settlement process and territorial expansion by identifying the location of their properties and their roles as witnesses and confirmers in charters. We will propose that, beneath royal interests and politics, as well as aristocrats and ecclesiastical institutions operating above the local level, wills attest to the agency of local elites from places whose ownership and influence over the town and associated sites was significant in their local spatial integration. - Abstract:
