- Abstract:
Thailand's same-sex marriage bill has been endorsed by the Senate, making it the first country in Southeast Asia to guarantee marriage equality. The bill, which was passed by the House of Representatives in March, received support from 130 out of 250 Senate members. Thailand will become the third country in Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal, to recognize same-sex marriage. The legislation will come into force 120 days after it is published in the Royal Gazette following a royal endorsement. The new laws will grant same-sex partners rights to inheritance, tax allowances, child adoption, and more. LGBTQ activists in Thailand have been fighting for marriage rights for over a decade, and they plan to push for further legislation to recognize gender-diverse and non-binary people. The Thai government has also expressed intentions to pass more progressive laws, including legislation to recognize gender identity and legalize prostitution. [Extracted from the article]
