- Abstract: More than 26 million people in the world suffer from heart failure and heart dysfunction. Examination of patients with both diseases, especially in the deceased, is very difficult due to lack of medical records, limitations of clinical examination and morphological changes that are not visible to the naked eye. Today, BNP and NT-proBNP have been widely used as significant indicators for the diagnosis of heart failure and cardiac dysfunction, both in clinical and forensic fields, and numerous studies have examined the usefulness of BNP and NT-proBNP from all sides in clinical and forensic fields. The purpose of this article is to discuss biological features, current research related to their applications and future research prospects of BNP and NT-proBNP in clinical and forensic fields. The method used in this study is a literature study, by collecting and analyzing relevant literature related to the role of BNP and NT-proBNP in the diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis of heart disease. BNP and NT-proBNP are important biomarkers in clinical and forensic fields for heart disease assessment. With technological developments in the field of molecular biology, it is expected that the use of BNP and NT-proBNP can become more precise and accurate in the future, improving diagnosis, treatment, and understanding of heart disease in both living and post-mortem patients.
