    • Abstract:
Ludwig Bemelmans, a renowned writer and illustrator, began his career by chance after being sent to America in 1914. In 1938, while on a summer vacation in France with his wife and daughter, Bemelmans had a bicycle accident that landed him in the hospital. During his stay, he met a young girl who had just had an appendectomy, and this encounter inspired him to create the beloved character Madeline. Bemelmans documented his family's memories of the trip in a personal scrapbook, which has never been published before. This vacation not only boosted Bemelmans' career but also created lasting memories for his family and introduced generations of readers to the wonders of Paris through the adventures of Madeline.
