- Abstract:
A recent study conducted by researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, examined the incidence and risk factors for mesh removal due to foreign body reaction and mesh infection following groin hernia repairs (GHRs) with mesh. The study analyzed data from the Swedish Hernia Register and found that out of 364,012 GHRs performed over a 30-year period, only 216 (0.059%) required re-surgery for mesh removal. The study identified several risk factors for re-surgery, including being female, younger age, comorbidity, emergency repairs, and postoperative complications. Overall, the study concluded that re-surgery for mesh removal due to foreign body reaction and mesh infection is rare, indicating a high tolerance for implanted mesh in groin tissue.
