    • Abstract:
Librarians today are not just keepers of books, but also activists dedicated to protecting free speech and access to information. The American Library Association reported a significant increase in censorship attempts, with many challenges coming from small but organized groups. Several states have passed laws that threaten library staff with fines or prison time for providing "harmful" or "pornographic" reading material to children and youth. Librarians who refuse to condone censorship have faced threats, harassment, and even violence. Despite these challenges, librarians are fighting back, forming collectives and organizations to protect intellectual freedom and educate the public about the harm caused by book banning.
