- Abstract: Introduction: foetal auscultation in the 19th century represented a milestone in the history of obstetrics, due to the relevance associated with knowing the life situation of the foetus in all gestational stages and at the most vulnerable moment of delivery. Initially, the acceptance of this method and its diagnostic expectations were controversial and uneven, but it generated a stimulus towards research in foetal physiology, considering the foetus as an entity on its own, which led to scientific knowledge, and in a parallel way, to the development of valid instruments to detect foetal heartbeat and control its status. Objective: to describe and put into context the historic background of obstetric auscultation, which provided knowledge and understanding on pregnancy and foetal status. To show the development of obstetric stethoscopes, the basis for foetal auscultation still used today. Materials and method: search in historic textbooks and medical journals on Gynaecology and Obstetrics. Discussion and conclusions: through the scientific knowledge in the 16th to 18th centuries about Anatomy, Physiology and Embryology, life to be born gained more attention, and the foetus was considered an independent being deserving protection, whose life was prioritized over maternal wellbeing. The discovery of foetal auscultation, which contributed to this advance, has been one of the important diagnostic resources to achieve an improvement in obstetric care; and although still used, it has given way to other diagnostic improvements for monitoring foetal status.
