- Abstract:
Spain is considering delaying the appointment of a new central bank governor until after the European Parliament elections next month. The current governor's term ends on June 10, and there has been no announcement yet on his replacement. The government wants to avoid making the appointment an election issue and may have the deputy governor serve as an interim until her own term ends in September. The new governor will also have a seat on the European Central Bank's Governing Council, which is expected to lower interest rates soon. The government has not provided any hints on a preferred candidate, but potential frontrunners include individuals from Spain's securities regulator, the Bank for International Settlements, the European Banking Authority, and the ECB.
