    • Abstract:
China has criticized the inaugural address of Taiwan's new President, Lai Ching-te, accusing him of sending a dangerous signal of seeking independence and undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Lai, who belongs to the Democratic Progressive Party, urged China to end its campaign of pressure on Taiwan and reiterated his commitment to maintaining the status quo with China. China views Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to bring the island under its control. In response to US arms sales to Taiwan, Beijing has sanctioned three US defense contractors. [Extracted from the article]
