    • Abstract:
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed a new mandatory Medicare payment model called Increasing Organ Transplant Access (IOTA) to improve the system connecting patients who need kidney transplants with viable organs. The six-year model aims to encourage transplant hospitals to use more available kidneys and facilitate more transplants from living donors, increasing access to organs for patients with end-stage renal disease while lowering Medicare spending. Under the model, hospitals would be measured based on the number of kidney transplants, organ acceptance rates, and quality of transplant care, and would receive bonus payments or be penalized accordingly. The proposal also includes provisions to address disparities in access to kidney transplants for underserved Black and minority patients. [Extracted from the article]
