A recent study conducted by researchers at Northeast Ohio Medical University has shed light on the age-related condition known as presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss. The study found that as individuals age, there is an increase in dense core vesicles (DCVs) in the central inferior colliculus (IC), a region of the central auditory system. These DCVs can carry neuropeptides, co-transmitters, neurotrophic factors, and proteins that participate in synaptogenesis. The researchers suggest that future studies should investigate whether specific neuropeptides contribute to the loss of inhibition and increase of excitability that occurs during presbycusis and tinnitus.
