- Abstract:
The local television industry is undergoing significant changes that will shape its future. Networks are moving their top shows to streaming platforms, and local news outlets are facing challenges and opportunities. Despite the disruption, local television remains a profitable sector, with over-the-air advertising revenue of $20.5 billion in 2022. Local broadcasters rely on retransmission fees from cable companies, but these fees are threatened by the shift to streaming. The rise of free ad-supported streaming TV platforms further complicates the scene. However, local broadcasters can adapt to these changes by leveraging their trusted brands, local knowledge, and unique content to engage with their communities in new ways and find new revenue streams.
