    • Abstract:
A preprint abstract from biorxiv.org discusses a colorimetric assay for measuring laccase activity in Cryptococcus neoformans, a fungal pathogen that causes cryptococcosis in immune compromised patients. The researchers discovered that culturing C. neoformans with food coloring resulted in the degradation of some dyes with phenolic structures, and they developed a food dye based colorimetric assay to measure laccase activity. This assay has advantages over the commonly used ABTS assay, including lower cost and irreversibility. The researchers suggest that this method could have applications in bioremediation and determining laccase virulence factor expression. [Extracted from the article]
