- Abstract: This text explores the complexities and debates surrounding academic freedom in the US, particularly in relation to recent social and political changes. It discusses the case of Steven Salaita, a professor whose controversial tweets led to his job offer being rescinded, and examines whether his tweets constituted extramural speech. The text also delves into the role of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) in protecting academic freedom and the potential tension between the AAUP and institutional autonomy. Additionally, it addresses challenges posed by Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) and the increasing number of non-tenured faculty members. The authors argue for a reevaluation of tenure and the need for equal academic freedom for all faculty members, while also suggesting a focus on speech ethics to foster a more inclusive academic environment.
