- Abstract:
Ally Russell's debut novel, "It Came from the Trees," tells the spine-chilling story of eleven-year-old Jenna Thomas, who enjoys camping in the woods near her Massachusetts home. However, her love for the outdoors is tested when her Cottontail Scouts troop encounters a large, hairy creature that snatches her best friend Reese from their tent. Despite Jenna's claims, her mother doubts her and the police accuse her of lying. Determined to save Reese, Jenna joins another troop and plans to plant survival packs for her friend. The novel addresses both supernatural and man-made threats, with descriptions of the creature being menacing and the anti-Black attitudes perpetuated by white authority figures being even more disturbing. Jenna and Reese are Black, adding a diverse perspective to the story. The book is recommended for readers aged 10 and up. [Extracted from the article]
