- Abstract:
The article discusses the Spare Tyre Nebula (IC 5148), a planetary nebula located in the constellation Grus the Crane. The nebula was formed when a Sun-like star shed its outer layers towards the end of its life. The debris from the star now appears as clumps surrounded by a faint bluish halo. At the center of the nebula is a white dwarf, the hot core of the dying star, which emits ultraviolet light that excites the gas in the nebula. The Spare Tyre Nebula is expanding at a rapid rate of 112,000 mph (180,000 km/h), making it one of the fastest expanding planetary nebulae. The nebula was discovered by Australian amateur astronomer Walter Gale in 1894 and is named after its shape, resembling a spare tire. The spelling of "tyre" is derived from British English.
