    • Abstract:
A recent study conducted at the Federal University Maranhao in Sao Luis, Brazil, explored the potential link between maternal periodontitis and preterm birth. The case-control study involved 120 participants, with 40 cases of preterm birth and 80 controls. The researchers found that periodontitis was significantly more prevalent in the case group compared to the control group. Additionally, certain clinical parameters and the ratio of specific bacteria in the subgingival biofilm were associated with preterm birth. This research suggests a possible relationship between periodontitis, preterm delivery, and low birth weight. [Extracted from the article]
