    • Abstract:
This article discusses the fundraising efforts to build a pedestal for the Statue of Liberty in the United States. The American arm of the Franco-American Union used various methods, such as benefit concerts and auctions, to raise money. One of the fundraising efforts resulted in the creation of a famous poem called "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus. The poem, which speaks to the plight of immigrants, was eventually placed on a plaque on the statue's pedestal and became a symbol of welcome to immigrants coming to the United States.
