- Abstract:
A recent report from Polytechnic University Marche in Ancona, Italy discusses a surgical technique that allows for the safe and easy administration of the drug nusinersen in patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) who require posterior spinal fusion surgery. Previously, surgical treatment of scoliosis in SMA patients was not compatible with drug therapy due to the bone graft obstructing the necessary lumbar puncture. The described technique involves performing a laminectomy during the spinal fusion surgery to provide access for intrathecal injection. The procedure was successful in allowing all patients to receive nusinersen therapy without complications. [Extracted from the article]
