    • Abstract:
Frost quakes, also known as cryoseisms, occur when water in soil freezes and expands rapidly, causing the ground to crack. While they are not rare, research on frost quakes has been limited due to their occurrence in sparsely populated areas. However, recent research from Finland suggests that frost quakes could become a more common natural hazard in the north. As the planet continues to warm, sub-Arctic areas may experience greater fluctuations in snow cover and temperatures, potentially leading to more frequent frost quakes. The next step in the research is to identify areas at risk and create hazard maps similar to those used for earthquakes. [Extracted from the article]
