    • Abstract:
A recent study conducted by researchers at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University in Taiwan investigated risk factors for prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) in critically ill patients with influenza-related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The study included 263 patients with influenza-related ARDS requiring invasive mechanical ventilation, with 78 patients experiencing PMV. The study found that risk factors for PMV included a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25, the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), combined bacterial pneumonia, and neuromuscular blockade use over 48 hours. Additionally, ECMO use and bacteremia were found to predict unsuccessful weaning in PMV patients. The study highlights the high mortality rate among patients with influenza-related ARDS and PMV and provides valuable insights into the management of these cases. [Extracted from the article]
