Global Innovations, Productive and Commercial Specialization: the Particularities of the Toyota Case in Argentina.
- Subject Terms:
- Abstract:
- Abstract:
By inaugurating its production plant in Zárate in 1997, Toyota became one of the last global automakers to set up a plant in Argentina. Twenty-five years later, Toyota leads the production, domestic sales and exports of vehicles in the country. The objective of this paper is to analyze the particularities of the Toyota case in Argentina, in order to identify the explanatory factors of its singular productive and commercial trajectory. The attributes studied to identify the differential features of Toyota will be the trajectory of the automotive groups at a global level, the productive specialization and foreign trade of the automotive companies in Argentina, the use of common platforms in production in the country, the export orientation of production, the incidence of extra-regional exports, and the development of local suppliers, among others. This will make it possible to identify the factors that could be extrapolated to improve the trajectory of the rest of the automotive industry in Argentina (and make visible the limitations that non-extrapolable factors represent in the process), as well as outline the role of public policy in said development.
