    • Abstract:
Severe infections with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes Covid-19, appear to increase the risk of being diagnosed with schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders. This suggests that Covid-19 may heighten the risk of developing schizophrenia. Researchers analyzed data from over 650,000 people in the US National COVID Cohort Collaborative and found that those who had Covid-19 were 4.6 times more likely to be diagnosed with a psychotic condition compared to those who tested negative for the virus. The increased risk may be due to Covid-19 causing inflammation in the brain and elevated levels of a substance called kynurenic acid, which is associated with psychosis. [Extracted from the article]
