- Abstract:
A recent study from Virginia Commonwealth University Health has revealed new findings on insulin edema associated with glargine in patients with diabetes mellitus. Insulin edema is a complication of insulin therapy that is poorly understood. It typically occurs in patients with newly diagnosed or poorly controlled diabetes mellitus after initiation or intensification of insulin therapy. The study presented a case of a 20-year-old man with type 1 diabetes who developed bilateral leg swelling and weight gain after starting insulin therapy with glargine. The edema resolved after switching to a different insulin. Insulin edema is a rare complication that clinicians should be aware of, and its mechanisms are still being studied.
