    • Abstract:
The recent discovery that several of the large standing stones outside the passage tomb at Newgrange were carved with megalithic art raises new questions about the chronology of the monument. A review of the published literature and unpublished archives has provided informative results which suggest that the standing stones were erected during the construction or use of the passage tomb rather than during the Bronze Age. Recent advances in dating for the earliest stone circles in Britain and Ireland offer additional support for this conclusion. A complete listing of sites with comparable features has yet to be drawn up, but details of notable sites in Britain and Ireland are presented here for comparative purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
