    • Abstract:
The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) is partnering with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in a 10-month research project to find an alternative to the tire antidegradant 6ppd. 6ppd is critical to consumer safety but can be fatal to some fish species. The goal of the partnership is to establish a new method for testing 6ppd alternatives and to narrow the parameters for tire manufacturers in their search for alternatives. The research will involve in vitro toxicity testing of fish cell linings and comparing the toxicity levels of different compounds to 6ppd-quinone. The USTMA is committed to advancing sustainability in the tire industry and believes a full mitigation strategy, including infrastructure efforts to filter or eliminate tire road wear particles, is necessary.
