Taxonomy of oil and Gas Companies by Their Innovation Activities. (English)
- Abstract:
The primary purpose of this paper is to identify the indicators of innovation activity, the taxonomy of oil and gas companies by these indicators, and propose policy tools (based on taxonomy findings) for the development of innovation in oil and gas companies. The data from the Iran innovation survey have been used to achieve the mentioned goal. In Iran Innovation Survey, which was implemented by the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology between 2011 and 2013, 2563 questionnaires were collected from companies, and by removing invalid questionnaires, the innovation of 2476 companies was evaluated. Among the 2476 investigated companies, 583 companies in 8 sectors and from 26 provinces were knowledge-based. Of these 583 enterprises, 73 were in the oil and gas sector and were classified on innovation activity indicators by using SPSS software and hierarchical clustering. As a result of the analysis, the companies in four clusters include (1) companies with low level of research and development activities, (2) companies with low level of cooperation and networking, (3) companies with low level of innovation organizational routines and processes and (4) companies with a low level of cooperation and networking and innovation organizational routines and processes were placed. Following the clustering analysis, according to each of the clusters obtained, policy tools will be proposed to improve the innovation activity of companies. In the end, according to the number of companies in the first and second clusters, which are much more than the other two clusters, it is concluded that the companies studied in the field of oil and gas have a low level from the perspective of research and development, cooperation, and networking and it is necessary to pay more attention to policy tools in order to improve the level of research and development and cooperation and networking.
