Characters Without History, Vanishing Times and Places: Precious Pages’ Translation of Harlequin Romance Novels. (English)

This article will present the results of a study that examines Precious Pages’ translation of several Harlequin novels. It focuses on the strategies used in translating personal names and names of places and their descriptions. It will discuss its effect on characterization and setting— particularly the erasure of personal histories and important contexts — and what motivates Precious Pages to omit important details in the translation. This paper is based on the assumption that the translation processes and methods and the translation products are shaped by the company’s skopos or purpose oriented towards profit to meet the Tagalog pocketbook reading community’s need for kilig and romance, and to maintain its position as “The Biggest Publishing House of Tagalog Romance Novels.” The study shows that readers have no problem with the localization and liberal omission of foreign elements in the translation of popular romances.
