- Abstract:
The article discusses the process and the challenges faced in the renaming of streets, parks and public spaces in New Orleans that honored figures connected to the Confederate insurrection, post-Civil War democratic disruption, or violations of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the US Constitution. The authors conclude that scholars involved in complex political processes need to recognize the need to build and sustain popular and political support for the proposed names and what they represent, and to emphasize the transformative power of historical thinking.
