- Abstract:
Johann Joachim Ewald (1727-1762) is an almost forgotten poet, but he is an author who, during the middle of the 18th century, travelled from Germany to Italy, composed epigrams, was a friend of poets and was in contact with the entire German Enlightenment and pietistic environment. The story and biography of this author give us an insight into the German literary period during the mid-eighteenth century, which was characterised by a lyricism that echoed traditional classical models, the anacreontic lyricism, emphasising a precise need for lightness in the literary plots of the time. In Ewald’s case, the epigrammatic form has a strong consonance with his extrovert and histrionic character. The article proposes a very short anthology that allows us to recognise in Ewald’s poems synthesis and brevity, but also a spirit and an evident inclination towards joking and jesting always present.
