The transformation of independent cinema into a marketing strategy known as "indie film" during the past decade has been widely noted, but even insiders wonder what it all means. The indies have become a farm team from which Hollywood can cull talent. But while the indies have been good for Hollywood, it's another question whether Hollywood has been good for the indies. Although independent cinema is too often caught up in the same logic that dominates Hollywood, it also serves as a refuge for more transgressive representations.
