This article focuses on a confusing statement on bonus during an election campaign in the U.S. 2002. During campaigning in January 2002 prior to an election on January 31, the employer, as part of its anti-union campaign, published a series of questions and answers for employees. The election resulted in a tie vote. The union charged that the way the bonus answer was phrased in the leaflet implied that employees would lose their 2002 bonus if they voted for the union. The subsequent announcement of the likely amount of the bonus unaccompanied by any statement that the employees would remain eligible for the bonus regardless of whether the union got in furthered the impression that employees were threatened with a loss of their bonus for 2002 if they chose to unionize, according to the union.
