      This article presents a research guide to the life and works of author Richard Brautigan. Born Richard Brautigan on January 30, 1935, in Tacoma, Washington, to Bernard and Lulu Brautigan; has a turbulent, nomadic childhood; abandoned at the age of nine with his four year old sister in a hotel room in Great Falls, Montana; mother later reclaims children and takes them home to Tacoma; family moves to Eugene, Oregon; finishes high school; 1955 embittered by criticism of his writings by a girlfriend, deliberately throws rock through the window of an Oregon police station; spends one week in jail; sent to the Oregon State Hospital where he is diagnosed as a paranoid schizophenic; 1956 abandons his family.
