Relationship between the five times sit to stand test and hip and knee extensor muscle strength and dynamic balance in functionally independent older adults. (English)
    • Abstract:
Background: The most frequently used test to assess the sit-to-stand ability in older adults is the Five Times Sit-to-Stand (5TSTS) test. Its validity as a measure of lower limb muscle strength has not been established. The purpose of the research was to determine the correlation of the 5TSTS test with lower limb muscle strength, dynamic balance and age in functionally independent older adults. Methods: We included 37 subjects. In a randomised order, we performed the 5TSTS test on each subject, tested hip and knee extensor strength and performed dynamic balance tests: the foursquare-step test and the step-up test. Results: The correlation between the 5TSTS and hip extensor strength was low negative (ro = -0.28), we did not find it with the knee extensors. The 5TSTS test showed a highly positive (ro = 0.72) correlation with the four-square step test and a highly negative (ro = -0.76) correlation with the step-up test. The correlation with subject age was weakly positive (ro = 0.38). Conclusions: The 5TSTS test is dependent on dynamic balance. Further research in a larger sample of subjects is needed to validate the 5TSTS test as a measure of lower limb muscle strength in functionally independent older adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
