- Abstract:
The availability of strategic and critical raw materials is at risk. At the height of the 2020s, the European Union (EU) continues to remain dependent on imports from overseas, including many countries with a high geographical risk. In addition, the vast majority of non-metallic and metallic minerals are received from a few third countries, furthermore underlining the EU's strategic dependencies. Two figures reflect the situation in 2020: the People's Republic of China supplied 94 % of the global output of rare earth elements (REE) and produced over 70 % of the semi-finished and finished products required worldwide. Access to resources - and a secure and sustainable supply - is crucial for the EU's resilience in many strategic and critical raw materials - not just REEs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
