    • Abstract:
Document indexing requires an adequate indexing system based on internationally adopted standards and guidelines such as ISO and IFLA. Being a controlled type of vocabulary, a thesaurus is an indexing tool containing terms and their mutual relationships presented as authority file entities, with adequate indexes (alphabetical, systematic.) Its use, especially for indexing and information retrieval in an automated library environment is not obsolete, particularly if it is based on widely-accepted classification schemes such as the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC). Quite the contrary, it is helpful both to the indexers and the library and bibliographic database users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
