    • Abstract:
Search services on the Internet far surpass the possibilities offered by remote online services both in their flexibility and user-friendly interfaces and in the information offered. All this challenges information retrieval and classification, which are looking ahead to the most significant development in their history with the appearance of the Internet. Ever since the beginning, search services are characterized by the same duality as all of the traditional content-based searching and ordering systems: robot-generated Web indices (indexing services, search engines) based on natural languages and sometimes using standardized vocabularies (thesauri) employing hierarchical classification systems have all been developed. Presents an attempt to synchronize the freshly-formed terminology with that of documentation and library sciences. Discusses Internet catalogs, and briefly considers the formats of primary and secondary (metadata) electronic documents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
