      After the Anglo-Boer War, also known as the South African War (1899-1902), Emily Hobhouse, a British humanitarian philanthropist, established several spinning and weaving schools in the Orange River Colony and Transvaal Colony between 1905 and 1908. This article focuses mainly on the origin, development and disbandment of the Orange River Colony / Orange Free State Home Industries Board (1908-1938) and thereafter the South African Home Industries Board (1939-1946), which developed from the Hobhouse home industries scheme.
