- Abstract: The Natural Sciences teaching is experiencing updates in its practices. Learning from scientific and technological developments seeks an approach with the student's reality to facilitate understanding of their world. In this sense, this paper aims to broaden the knowledge that students of the 8th grade of elementary school have on DNA, genetics, cell, and heredity using mental representations models. The analysis was made employing questions and graphical representations. The answers were classified into three types of mental representations: propositional (rich in symbols), imagistic (predominantly images), and hybrid (the combination of imagistic and propositional). The analyzed data showed that the media influenced the students' knowledge, actually detected by how they answered the questionnaires. Mental models are an early form of student learning and offer useful for research, allowing the teacher to direct your approach, assisting in the teaching-learning process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
