Enslaved women and resistance to slavery in Luanda in the 19th century. (English)
    • Abstract:
Based on cases of escape and recapture, slave records, travelers’ accounts and official documentation, this paper analyzes women’s resistance to slavery in Luanda in the second half of the nineteenth century. The cases explored here suggest that enslaved women were active agents in the resistance to slavery, highlighting the importance of considering gender as a category to analyze the experiences of enslaved Africans. Enslaved women fled individually or in groups and joined runaway communities in the interior. They also gained freedom through the purchase of manumission and ransom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
