      This study aims to analyze the role of zakat in financing small projects and what it contributes to reducing poverty and unemployment in society. The researcher followed the descriptive analytical approach by studying the texts contained in the Qur'an and Sunnah and tracking the applications of zakat in the light of the Islamic civilization. In addition to that pieces of evidence from Islamic history were also reviewed and analyzed to explore and discuss the concerned issue. Whether its proceeds are directed to meet their immediate (consumptive) needs or their investment needs represented in the establishment of small productive projects with economic effectiveness. Zakat can preserve the existing small projects in the event that they suffer a loss through the share of debtors. The study showed that zakat has a vital role in the economic empowerment of the categories of the poor, needy and debtors who are entitled to it, whether its proceeds are directed to meet their immediate (consumptive) needs or their investment needs represented in the establishment of small productive projects with economic effectiveness.
